Hey sneakerlovers! New Balance has been making a big name for itself in the sneaker scene over the past couple of years. However, not many people know it's history, which is actually quite big. And since it's so bag, I would like focus this blog on one of my favourite models, the New Balance 997. First I will dive into the history of the 997, and then I will share my favourite 997 models, so that you too, can get yourself one of these awesome pairs!
A little history, and why the 997 is so iconic
The New Balance brand originated in Boston, established as the 'New Balance Arch Support Company' in 1901. All of the sneakers of the 99x line were originally created as running shoes, designed for the best performance.
The 997 model was released in 1991, and made a strong entrance into the market. The shoes innovation consisted of unique synthesis of style and technology. The 997 used the new moulded technique. The ENCAP and C-CAP cushioning technology were combined in the midsole. The first one was in the ball of the foot, and the second one in the backfoot. This created maximum stability and flexibility.
The New Balance 997 entered the sneaker market in a time of sneaker rivalry. Many brands started putting down factories in Asia and the Middle East for cheaper manufacturing. New Balance however, decided to stay in the United States, and partially in the UK, for their production. Because of this, the 997 was unique in the history of the brand. But it also resulted in the 997 becoming the symbol of the classic American style. None other than Bill Clinton could be seen running with these shoes.
Since then, the 997 has become an icon for the New Balance brand, as well as in the whole sneaker industry. In 2019 a new reiteration was launched: the 997H. The 997H has been made using the GCEVA technology, that provides a more modern sole and a lighter fit. The pair features a pleather upper, but still with details from the 90s, such as mesh and leather, the embossed edge of the tab, and the inserts in suede.
Neutrals
New Balance is also known for it's ability to present sneakers with New Balance's signature colorscheme filled with different grey-tones repeatedly, but always make them stand out in their own unique way. Moreover, the New Balance 997 was actually the first NB silhouette to have a specific women's version, which was renamed to W997.
