The History Of PUMA
1940s
28 years after founding their company, the Dassler brothers fall out and go their separate ways. Together with 14 employees, Rudolf transforms this storage facility into a factory and founds his own company which he later decided to name the “PUMA Schuhfabrik Rudolf Dassler”. Meanwhile, his brother Adolf was establishing adidas.
1950-1952
The first football boot, the ATOM, developed by Rudolf Dassler in 1950, quickly established PUMA in the sports footwear industry. Next was the introduction of the SUPER ATOM in 1952 which created a sensation. Rudolf Dassler, in collaboration with experts including West Germany’s national coach Sepp Herberger, pioneers the world’s first boot with screw-in studs.
1958
In 1958, PUMA patented its second brand logo, the FORMSTRIP. Initially designed to provide foot stability, it has evolved into a PUMA trademark, adorning almost every pair of PUMA footwear and serving as a design element on apparel items. Its visibility skyrocketed globally, thanks to the rise of emerging media.
1970s
In the 1970s, PUMA was a key player on the basketball court so PUMA collaborated with NBA player Walt "Clyde" Franzier. Renowned for his distinctive off-court fashion sense, he acquires the moniker "Clyde" inspired by the character from "Bonnie and Clyde." When he sought a personalized pair of basketball shoes, PUMA was immediately in the game, creating the iconic PUMA CLYDE. As a result of its innovative shock-absorbing outsole, PUMA's beginnings in track shoes were marked in '78 with the introduction of PUMA Fast Rider.
1980s - 1990s
In 1984, PUMA introduced its first computer-equipped shoe, the RS-Computer, ahead of the technological wave. The Disc System, introduced two years later, revolutionized lacing mechanisms with its custom fit. In 1991, PUMA introduced Trinomic cushioning, which improved runners' comfort and support. The Cell Technology, introduced a year later, improved stability and energy return.
2000s -2010s
The new millennium marked a new era for the brand. PUMA created the evoSPEED shoe in collaboration with Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt in the 2000s. In 2007, PUMA launched its Complete series of specialized running shoes. In 2010, PUMA introduced Ignite foam technology in their running shoes to provide responsive cushioning. In 2018, PUMA introduced the RS-X series, reimagining the 1980s Running System for today's audiences.
PUMA Today
Innovation and performance remained PUMA's top priorities in the 2020s. In 2021, Future Z football boots were equipped with an adaptive FUZIONFIT+ compression band. The company also uses recycled materials and eco-friendly manufacturing practices. As a footwear leader in the world, PUMA has consistently emphasized style, performance, and technology.

The RS-Computer Shoe tracked steps, calories, and running performance despite a lack of faith in wearable technologies and the resistance of its time, when such technologies were considered sci-fi in the 80s.
Due to its data processing ability, the shoe was limited in production and primarily sold in the US.
