The History of UGG
The UGG legacy begins in the 1970s, when local Sydney surfing legend Shane Stedman trademarked the term 'Ugh-boots', helping the sheepskin boots become internationally popular amongst competitive surfers. The fleece-lined boots with a tanned outer surface where ideal for keeping cold post-surf feet warm, and were further popularised with the youth as a sign of rebellion after being banned in cinemas around Sydney.
In 1978, Brian Smith, another Australian surfer, brought UGG to the American west coast. The cosy boots quickly gained a following among the Southern California surf community. Throughout the 80s, the UGG became a symbol of casual lifestyle in and out of California. Found only in surf stores at the beginning, ski stores recognised their potential and started to stock them as well.

A pivotal moment came when Deckers Outdoor Corporation (now Deckers Brands) purchased UGG from Smith in 1995. Transforming UGG from a niche surf product into a luxury lifestyle brand, the boot exploded in popularity, and was quickly seen on the feet of celebrities like Paris Hilton, Cameron Diaz, J-Lo and Kate Hudson. Oprah Winfrey caused a massive surge of sales for UGG after including them in her 'Favourite Things’ list in 2003.

In 2011, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was featured in UGG’s first men’s campaign, and shortly afterwards notable celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio were spotted wearing the boots.

UGG is known for their craftsmanship and long-lasting quality, with products made from premium materials that provide comfort and support. Alongside their boots, UGG also produces sandals, coats, socks, handbags, gloves, and household accessories including blankets, pillows, rugs, and towels.
UGG: Answering Your Questions
What does UGG mean?
There’s some argument on who came up with the term ‘UGG’ – Australian and UK pilots in the war would lace up sheepskin around their feet to ward off frostbite, and may be the originator of the term UGG, and they called the makeshift boots ‘flying UGG’s’, short for ugly.
However, Frank Mortel of Mortel’s Sheepskin Company claims he was the first to name the boots 'UGG boot' in 1958, after his wife commented that the first pair he made were ugly.
Later in the 1970s, Sydney surfing legend Shane Stedman trademarked the term ‘Ugh-boots’ and has since claimed to have invented the Australian icon.
What are UGGs made of?
Classic UGG boots are typically made from Australian sourced sheepskin and fleece. The natural insulating properties of sheepskin help the thick fleecy fibres on the inner part of the boots wick moisture and allow air circulation, which helps the boots keep your feet warm in cold weather and cool in hot weather.
Are UGGs water resistant?
Classic UGG Boots are water-resistant, and have natural moisture-wicking properties, a natural breathable lining, and an outer shell of pre-treated suede. This all means that they're designed to keep your feet dry, protected, and comfortable in any weather, including rain and snow. For additional protection, consider using UGG's Protector spray.
Do UGGs really keep your feet warm?
Many models of UGGs keep your feet warm. They are made of lambskin, which provides a lot of warmth, but at the same time is able to regulate temperatures. So you can wear your UGG boots in any season.
Where are UGGs made?
Although the brand originally began in Australia, UGG boots are primarily made in China and Vietnam.
Are UGGs sustainable?
In 2016, UGG joined the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative. Using responsible materials like sheepskin from regenerative farms, renewable and plant-based materials, and organic cotton, amongst many others, UGG are dedicated to finding ways to reduce their footprint and work towards a more regenerative world.
The brand introduced the UGGrenew restoration program as a way for customers to extend the life of their favourite boots, showing initiative in providing sustainable products that last for years.
Are UGG boots true to size?
UGG boots and sneakers turn out true to size, but the slippers can run a bit small, so it's recommended to size up for UGG slippers.
Should you wear socks under UGGs?
The sheepskin used in the UGG boots not only has the function of keeping your feet warm, but also has a temperature-balancing effect. Therefore, UGG itself recommends to wear the boots without socks.
How do you clean UGGs?
You might be tempted to throw your UGGs in the washing machine when they need a clean, but this can severely damage the delicate materials the shoes are made from. Instead, here are some tips on how to care for your UGGS:
- Dry stains can be brushed out with a suede brush.
- Clean the shoes with a damp sponge and clean water, then air dry them in a cool, dry space or blot with a towel.
- If your UGG boots get wet, stuff them with newspaper to help naturally remove any odour and help them keep their shape as they dry.
For the best care, purchase UGG's Care Kit, which includes Protector, Cleaner & Conditioner, Shoe Renew, a Bamboo Handle Brush and a Suede Scuff Eraser.
