On October 25, 2024, news broke that the New York artist had passed away. “It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of the beloved Rodolfo A. Franklin, known to the world as DJ Clark Kent,” a statement on his Instagram stated. “Clark passed away Thursday evening surrounded by his devoted wife Kesha, daughter Kabriah, and son Antonio.”

Kent had been quietly battling colon cancer for the past three years. “The family is grateful for everyone's love, support, and prayers during this time and asks for privacy as they process this immense loss,” Kent's family said.

Kent played a major role in the hip-hop scene. His distinctive DJ style combined soulful samples with dynamic beats. Kent carried the nickname 'God's Favorite DJ,' a title he fully lived up to. He produced songs for hip-hop artists such as Rakim, The Fugees, and 50 Cent, and was the one who introduced Jay-Z to Biggie.

The DJ worked on songs like “Brooklyn's Finest” from Reasonable Doubt, Jay-Z's debut album, and scored a big hit with Junior M.A.F.I.A.'s “Player's Anthem. Kent was also a big name in the sneaker scene and owned one of the world's largest Nike Air Force 1 collections, earning him the nickname 'The Mayor'.

His love for sneakers led to several collaborations with Nike. One of his most recognizable projects was the '112 Pack,' released in 2008. The pack, named after the zip code of Brooklyn - Kent's hometown - included three iconic models: the Air Force 1, Air Max 1, and Air Trainer 1.

Kent regularly donated sneakers from his personal collection, often posting a photo on social media with a hint about where to find them. His passion for sneakers and hip-hop went hand in hand, complementing each other when needed.

Nike commented on Kent's passing: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend and true cultural icon, DJ Clark Kent. At Nike, we were honored to collaborate with Clark on projects that celebrated not only his deep love for sneakers but also his unwavering dedication to pushing creative boundaries and elevating culture.”
