The History of the adidas NMD
A more recent model from the adidas brand, the NMD was first seen in 2015 where it was unveiled at an event in New York, and released to the public two days later. Also known as the ‘Nomad’, the NMD_R1 were developed from the nomadic spirit of adidas Originals and are specifically designed for urban exploration.
The NMD’s design draws on elements from the 1980s, using the Micro Pacer, Rising Star and Boston Super for retro influences. Distilling this into a bold mix of shapes, angles and materials, adidas managed to combine the features of classic sneakers with a modern, dynamic silhouette. The flexible, Primeknit upper of the shoe combines with Boost cushioning in the sole for a snug and comfortable fit.
The NMD focused on providing a lifestyle shoe for every moment. Since its first release in a ‘Core Black’ colorway, the NMD has been an instant hit. Fans lined up for hours to buy the NMD in the OG colorway, and while queues were largely controlled, some retailers had to cancel sales due to dangerous situations. This ultimately contributed to the introduction of raffles.

However, the NMD’s success didn’t last forever. adidas focused too much on the model, and the development of new products, partnerships, and technologies declined. While affecting other models like the Stan Smith and Superstar, the reliance on the NMD also became unsustainable due to changing cultural tastes and increasing competition from Nike.
This all led to the momentum adidas had generated fading in 2018, where the hype began to shift to Nike. Recently, however, adidas has managed to reignite the conversation around the model, thanks in part to brand partner Pharrell Williams. Instrumental in the launch of the NMD Human Race (HU) in 2016, the success made him the perfect collaborator of the adidas NMD S1 (Sneaker 1) which sold out within minutes of its release in 2022.
Today, the silhouette is still a popular and comfortable all-rounder for everyday wear, and new versions are released continuously.
adidas NMD x Pharrell Williams
One of his most iconic collaborations, Pharrell Williams brought bold colours and powerful messages to multiple versions of the adidas NMD. Since 2016, the ‘Human Race’ collection has been one of the most celebrated collaborations in sneaker culture, and a huge boost for the NMD’s popularity.

The debut colorway featured a bold yellow upper, drawing attention with its bright aesthetics. The 2017 ‘Trail’ pack came with multiple colour options and empowering messages like “Breathe” and “Walk”.
Two packs dropped in 2018 – the ‘Inspiration’ pack was inspired by East Asian culture with vibrant colorways featuring embroidered Chinese characters, while the Solar Hu collection represented African heritage. It incorporated tribal patterns and cultural references, with messages like “Empower” and “Inspire”.

In 2019, Pharrell William and adidas also teamed up with NIGO’s Human Made, releasing a sneaker that featured minimalist white and red colour blocking and a “Human Made” heart logo.
Most recently, in 2023, the MAHBS collection was released, replacing the usual Primeknit upper with canvas and a knit bootie construction. A few colorways were dropped including the ‘Mint’, ‘Pink’, 'Oatmeal' and ‘Earth Strata’, inspired by Pharrell’s global travels.

How do I clean my adidas NMD?
An adidas NMD is best cleaned by hand. For the best results, remove the laces, then use a toothbrush to remove obvious dirt from the surface. Mix a mild detergent with some water, and use a sponge or cloth to gently scrub harder stains. Use a damp cloth to wipe off the residue, then let them air-dry.
For a smelly sneaker, you can sprinkle baking soda inside the shoe, then leave overnight. The powder will absorb moisture and neutralise the smell. Shake out the excess before wearing again. Alternatively, you can use silica gel or activated charcoal bags for the same results.
Laces can be cleaned with a mild detergent and rinsed afterwards, or you can put white laces in a 1:5 bleach and water solution for a few minutes and then rinse thoroughly with clean water.
In addition, we do not recommend putting your shoes in the washing machine. Sneakers made of leather and suede can come out damaged. With shoes made of canvas or cotton, the risk is less, but the chance of damaged sneakers remains. So we recommend always washing your sneakers by hand. If you do put them in the washing machine, then place the shoes in an old pillowcase beforehand.
