In 2022, it finally appeared: the New Balance 990v6, the sequel to the 990v5, and other models in the New Balance 990 series. The silhouette was introduced in a commercial featuring Action Bronson, who later released a collab with the 990v6.
Since the model debuted, the 990v6 has captured the hearts of many sneaker lovers. Read all about the history of the sneaker and get answers to the most frequently asked questions here.
The 990 series
The New Balance 990v6 is the latest silhouette from New Balance's 990 series. The sneaker succeeds popular releases such as the 990v4, 990v3, and 990v2. In 1982, New Balance introduced the 990 series with its first silhouette; the New Balance 990, a sleek design that used advanced technologies.
The New Balance 990 was designed as a running shoe. As such, the design's focus was on cushioning and comfort, something that would come in handy on the track. At the time, with a retail price of €100, the model was one of the most expensive running shoes on the market, making the sneaker a symbol of luxury and quality.
In 1998, the New Balance 990 got a little brother: the 990v2. The sneaker built on the technologies of the first variant, but introduced the ABZORB midsole, which provided extra cushioning.

Since then things have gone fast, New Balance introduced one silhouette after another and in 2019 released the 990v5, a chunky design that bridged the gap between performance and style.
New Balance 990v6
Some three years later, the 990v6, New Balance's flagship sports and design product, appeared. The sneaker was introduced in the “Runners aren't normal” campaign which included rapper Action Bronson, athlete Trayvon Bromell, and model Harsahej Singh Anand.
The sneaker is part of the MADE in USA line, which means all sneakers are designed with attention to detail in the factories in Boston, Massachusetts. The 990v6 silhouette made its debut in the 'Grey' colorway, a signature colorway from New Balance.
The sneaker uses FuelCel foam in the sole and an ENCAP midsole cushioning that uses durable polyurethane. The upper is composed of sturdy mesh, leather, and suede.
Popular releases
Since its debut, the New Balance 990v6 has already added several colorways. In 2023, Action Bronson, rapper and host of his own program “F*CK, THAT'S DELICIOUS” who also appeared in the 990v6's campaign, came out with two colorways of the silhouette: 'Balaklava' and 'Lapis Lazuli'.
Both sneakers had striking colorways, typical of Bronson's releases. Both the 990v6 'Balaklava' and 'Lapus Lazuli' were a huge success and were followed by more Action Bronson x New Balance releases - and we're fans.
During the Paris Olympics, another major player at New Balance appeared with his own 990v6 colorways: Joe Freshgoods. Especially for the games, the Chicago-based designer came out with a 'Paris Red' and 'Prom Blue' colorway of the sneaker.
The colorways hinted at both the flag of France, where the games were held, and the flag of America, or more specifically, Chicago, Freshgoods' home base.
New York clothing label KITH also received its own 990v6 release, as did Carhartt WIP, Aimé Leon Dore, and Loro Piana (which had a retail price of €1,500). Yet New Balance's regular releases, part of the Made in USA line and designed by Aimé Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis, also caught the eye of many.
